Job Opportunities
We are very interested in inquiries from highly motivated individuals seeking junior faculty, postdoctoral, or research technician opportunities in the laboratory. Research interests of the laboratory are very broad, and include modern genetic, molecular biological, cellular, biochemical, imaging, neuroanatomical, computational, and behavioral techniques to understand learning and learning-related behaviors in Drosophila, the mouse, and humans. The vast majority of projects include this multi-level approach towards an understanding of behavior. We are currently interested in building additional strength in the following areas:
Laboratory Technician
This job is an opportunity to join a major laboratory at the Baylor College of Medicine (Houston) that studies the molecular and cellular basis of learning and memory. The individual selected will perform behavioral assays on experimental animals to determine the extent of learning or the persistence of memory. Animal care, breeding experiments, and the construction of transgenic research animals are involved. Various molecular experiments on the animals, including gene cloning, Northern blots, PCR, and Western experiments will also be required. The research will use the mouse as experimental systems. A bachelors degree in the biological sciences and/or psychology is required. A background in both areas is desirable. No prior laboratory experience is necessary, but we are seeking a highly motivated individual eager to learn and contribute to the scientific mission of the lab.
Postdoctoral Fellow or Junior Faculty Member
The Laboratory through its affiliation with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is seeking to fill new positions at either the postdoctoral fellow or junior faculty level (depending upon the candidate's qualifications) for collaborative studies on the molecular genetics of mood and learning disorders. These positions will be filled by motivated and energetic individuals experienced in molecular biology with a strong interest in the genetic basis of psychiatric disorders. A Ph.D. in molecular genetics or molecular biology and/or several years of experience in a molecular biology laboratory is essential. The successful candidate will perform associational genetic studies and/or be involved in the development of mouse models for psychiatric disorders.
Postdoctoral Fellows
The Laboratory through its affiliation with the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology has postdoctoral positions available. Projects involving the molecular and cellular biology of memory formation in Drosophila and the mouse using genetic, molecular, cellular, anatomical and behavioral approaches are being pursued. The laboratory is in particular currently building additional strength in several areas. These include confocal and two-photon microscopy for the structural and functional imaging of the Drosophila brain, behavioral and genetic analysis of Drosophila learning mutants, and molecular genetic analyses of mouse learning mutants. Most research projects employ diverse techniques and address questions that range from the molecular to the behavioral. A Ph.D. or M.D. is required with appropriate experience in the biological, chemical, physical, or brain sciences.
